Maxine Esteban (17)

I started fencing when I was 12 years old. From the very start, I always had this Olympic dream in my mind. I was very determined to train hard and become Philippine's first ever Olympic qualified fencer. I train everyday for 3-4 hours. After school, I would go straight to Ultra, Pasig to have my 1v1 lessons with my coach, Amatov Canlas and then I would wait for the national team and start fencing with them. It was very hard for me to maintain my honors in school and my fencing career at the same time but this didn't stop me from achieving my dream. Every summer, instead of going to the beaches to have my vacation or hangout with my friends, I would go to United States to train for a month and compete in different parts of the world after. It was very hard for me to be separated with my family and friends at the same time but I knew that this will all be worth it. I still continue to work hard everyday so that one day I will be able to make our country proud.
