Erika Rankin (19)

I began competing in swimming at the age of 8. From there, I transitioned into racing in triathlons. Gradually I became very competitive in triathlon and was performing as the top youth in Ontario and top 6 in Canada. In my U19 career as a triathlete I became a part of Team Ontario, giving me the opportunity to represent Ontario at all of the Ontario Cup race series events, train as part of the provincial team, and represent Canada at the junior CamTri race in Sarasota, Florida; placing top 30 in PanAm. Being a part of the provincial team allowed me to develop as an athlete, through personal growth when learning my strengths and weakness, as well as having access to high performance coaches, nutritionists, physiotherapy and more. Unfortunately, in the summer of 2017 I was severely concussed, which prevented me from racing. When I went to university; Queen's University, to study chemical engineering, I decided to take a break from triathlon and switch to rowing. For the past 2 years I have been a part of the Queen's Varsity Rowing Team, competing in a lightweight double scull, and placing 2nd at the Ontario Development Championships this season. However, I have presently decided to make the move back to my roots and compete in cycling; both road and mountain biking. The diversity that I have had in sport has allowed me to excel as I have gathered an incredible amount of diverse skills, work ethic, and determination. Taking these lessons and determining new goals for my upcoming races in cycling will allow me to perform to the best of my capabilities.
